Cape Town's supply is almost entirely surface water, held in the six Western Cape Water Supply System dams that fill from winter rainfall in the mountains east of the city. Borehole Geology in Cape Town
Two very different drilling environments sit within the metro. The Cape Flats aquifer is a shallow, unconsolidated sand body — boreholes and wellpoints of 15 m to 40 m yield well but are easily contaminated, so casing and sanitary sealing are critical. Beneath and around it, the Table Mountain Group quartzites hold water in deep fractures, requiring holes of 100 m to 250 m and often producing excellent, very soft water.
In Malmesbury Shale areas around Durbanville and parts of the northern suburbs, yields are less predictable and iron content higher. Coastal sites need careful pump-rate design: draw too hard near the shoreline and seawater intrusion turns a good hole brackish permanently.
