# Water Solutions in Gauteng

As South Africa's economic heartland, Gauteng demands industrial-grade water solutions. iWater Management operates from our Germiston headquarters to serve mines, factories, estates, and commercial developments across the province.

## Water Challenges in Gauteng

Gauteng faces unique water supply and quality challenges. iWater Management delivers engineered solutions tailored to local conditions in Gauteng.

Acid mine drainage contaminating groundwater sources

Rapid urbanisation straining municipal supply networks

Industrial compliance requirements for wastewater discharge

Load shedding disrupting powered water systems

High-density developments requiring large storage capacity

### Why Gauteng Chooses iWater

- 100+ installations across South Africa
- SANS 241 compliant testing & treatment
- End-to-end: design, install, maintain
- 30–50% water savings achieved
- Local teams with fast response times

## Understanding Water Supply in Gauteng

Gauteng is the most water-stressed economy in the country relative to its own resources. The province generates roughly a third of national GDP on rainfall it does not have, and depends on the Integrated Vaal River System and the Lesotho Highlands Water Project transfer to make up the difference. Rand Water's bulk system runs close to its design ceiling in summer, which is why reservoir levels — not dam levels — are what actually cause your taps to run dry.

The province's groundwater tells a harder story. The Witwatersrand gold basin generates acid mine drainage with pH below 3 and high sulphate, iron and dissolved metals, decanting from the Western, Central and Eastern basins. Dolomitic compartments north of the Witwatersrand hold enormous volumes of good hard water but are sinkhole-prone and require careful drilling. Between the two, the answer is always to test first and design the treatment train around the actual analysis.

## Local Conditions, Regulation & Geology

What our engineers account for when designing a water system in Gauteng.

### Municipal Supply & Restrictions

Rand Water applies system-wide restrictions each summer, enforced by Johannesburg Water, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and Emfuleni through their own by-laws: no irrigation between 06:00 and 18:00, no hosing down of paved areas, and no filling of pools during restriction periods. Throttling of reservoir outflows is used aggressively to protect storage, producing the now-familiar evening pressure collapse on high-lying suburbs.

Industrial users must hold trade effluent permits for discharge to sewer, and any abstraction beyond reasonable domestic use requires registration or a water use licence under the National Water Act. Fire water storage on commercial sites must meet SANS 10400-W and ASIB requirements. We take all three obligations on as part of the design.

### Industries We Supply in Gauteng

Mining across the West Rand and East Rand needs treatment at scale — acid mine drainage neutralisation, process water and potable supply for personnel on sites far from any municipal main. Manufacturing and logistics in Germiston, Isando, Wadeville and Rosslyn need process water quality, effluent compliance and fire reserves. High-density residential estates and mixed-use developments across Midrand, Fourways and Centurion need bulk storage and pressure systems sized so residents never experience the municipal throttling their neighbours do.

### Borehole Geology in Gauteng

Gauteng drilling spans four very different terrains. Dolomite in the Centurion, Krugersdorp and Midrand areas offers the highest yields in the province but demands sinkhole risk assessment and careful casing. Witwatersrand quartzites along the reef are hard, slow drilling with fracture-controlled water. Karoo sediments in the south around the Vaal are moderate yielders, and the Halfway House granites through Midrand and Sandton give unpredictable results tied to weathered zone thickness.

Depths run from 60 m in dolomite to over 200 m on the reef. In any area with mining history we case deeply and test comprehensively before a pump is specified, because contaminated shallow water entering a hole compromises the entire supply.
