## Water Challenges in Nelspruit

Nelspruit faces unique water supply and quality challenges. iWater Management delivers engineered solutions tailored to local conditions in Mpumalanga.

Subtropical climate with seasonal water availability

Tourism lodges and game reserves requiring off-grid solutions

Citrus and subtropical farming irrigation needs

Remote rural communities without treated water access

Rapidly growing urban areas outpacing infrastructure

### Why Nelspruit Chooses iWater

- 100+ installations across South Africa
- SANS 241 compliant testing & treatment
- End-to-end: design, install, maintain
- 30–50% water savings achieved
- Local teams with fast response times

## Understanding Water Supply in Nelspruit

Mbombela sits in the Lowveld at around 660 m, drawing on the Crocodile River and the Kwena and Longmere dam systems. Summer rainfall is high and often intense, while winters are dry and warm — a pattern that concentrates the entire year's supply into a few months and puts the region under real pressure by September. The 2015-2016 and 2019 droughts saw Kwena drop far enough to trigger allocation cuts across the catchment.

The Crocodile catchment is also heavily allocated, shared between irrigated agriculture, the Kruger National Park's ecological reserve and downstream international obligations to Mozambique. Water quality concerns centre on agricultural runoff, sediment after storm events and, in outlying rural areas, untreated supply from unprotected sources. Lowveld groundwater is generally soft, sometimes iron-bearing, and of good chemical quality where boreholes are properly cased.

## Local Conditions, Regulation & Geology

What our engineers account for when designing a water system in Nelspruit.

### Municipal Supply & Restrictions

The City of Mbombela imposes restrictions when Crocodile catchment allocations are cut, typically limiting irrigation hours and prohibiting non-essential use, and outer areas experience interruptions from infrastructure that has not kept pace with urban growth around Riverside and Nelspruit Extension.

Irrigation farmers abstracting from the Crocodile or its tributaries hold water use entitlements administered through the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency, with allocations reduced proportionally in drought. Boreholes used for commercial irrigation require registration and metered records, and we design storage that lets farms use their full entitlement when it is available rather than losing it.

### Industries We Supply in Nelspruit

Subtropical agriculture is the Lowveld's engine — citrus, macadamias, avocados, bananas, mangoes and sugar cane, all irrigation-dependent and all vulnerable to an allocation cut. These operations need borehole capacity, large storage and solar pumping that keeps micro-irrigation running through load shedding. Tourism is the second pillar: lodges around Hazyview, White River and the Kruger gateways operate off-grid or semi-off-grid and need potable water treated to guest standard from raw borehole or river sources. Growing urban and commercial development around Riverside and Mbombela's business districts adds demand for backup supply, and rural schools and clinics beyond the network need safe drinking water outright.

### Borehole Geology in Nelspruit

The Lowveld around Mbombela sits on Barberton Greenstone Belt rocks and Archaean granites and gneisses — some of the oldest formations on earth and not naturally generous with water. Yields depend entirely on intersecting fracture zones, contact zones or thick weathered saprolite, so geophysical siting is essential rather than optional.

Depths of 60 m to 140 m are common with yields of 800 to 3 000 litres per hour, though quartz vein and shear zone intersections can produce considerably more. The deep weathering profile means solid casing through the upper section is standard, and slow-recharging holes are best paired with generous storage rather than a larger pump.
